# How to monitor Reddit for brand mentions

**The short answer**

Watch the **subreddits your customers use**, for **your brand and every spelling of it**, and judge
each mention before it reaches you. A thread where someone is choosing between products and a
listing for a second-hand item are very different things. Reddit has no brand alert of its own, so
the watching is done by a monitoring tool.

Redwatcher is a Reddit monitoring tool that scores every keyword match for relevance before it
alerts you. From $29 a month, seven-day trial, no card.

## Why Reddit is worth the separate effort

A brand mention on Reddit is rarely addressed to you. It happens inside a conversation between other
people: someone asking which tool to use, someone answering with the one they already have, someone
explaining why they left.

Two things follow from that. You are watching a decision get made, so getting there while the thread
is still live matters more than any monthly report. And the thread stays online: Reddit ranks in
search and gets read for years afterwards, so a question about your product that nobody answered
keeps being the answer people find.

## Step 1 — Start with the communities

Start with the places, before the words: the subreddits for your category, the ones for products
like yours, and the general communities where your kind of question gets asked. Naming the
communities is what keeps the volume down to something a person can get through in a morning.

Redwatcher proposes the list from your website and checks each subreddit against Reddit as you
accept it.

![Redwatcher's setup proposing the subreddits to watch, each checked against Reddit as it is accepted](img/product-subreddits.png "**The communities, named by you.** Setup proposes them from your site; each one is checked against Reddit as you accept it, so you finish with communities that exist and are still active.")

## Step 2 — Cover every spelling of your brand

People do not write your brand the way your style guide does. Capitalisation changes, hyphens
disappear, letters get dropped, the plural appears. Put the variants under each name you track. It
takes a minute, costs nothing against your keyword allowance, and picks up mentions you would
otherwise never see.

![Redwatcher's setup asking for your own brand, with the website field and the spellings listed under the name](img/product-brand.png "**Your brand, and the spellings under it.** Give it the website and it reads the site; every name carries the variants people actually type, so a mention that misses the official spelling still matches.")

## Step 3 — Track competitors alongside your own name

Threads that name a competitor are usually threads where someone is choosing between products, which
makes them more useful than mentions of your own name. Each competitor counts as one keyword.

![Redwatcher's setup listing the competitors being tracked, each with its domain and its spellings](img/product-competitors.png "**Each competitor is one name, with its own spellings.** Every one counts as a single keyword against the plan, and the panel suggests more from what it read on your site.")

## Step 4 — Decide what deserves an answer

Not every mention is worth answering. Redwatcher scores every mention from 0 to 100 for relevance in
context, with the reasons attached, and sends only what clears the bar you set. Mentions below the
bar are kept and counted in the app, so you can still see how much came in.

![The Redwatcher inbox for a Klaviyo project: a thread scored 94, a competitor comparison scored 88, and a job post scored 24 and skipped, each with the reasons underneath](img/product-inbox.png "**Every thread carries its score.** The term that matched is highlighted in the title, the reasons sit under it, and anything below your bar is skipped and counted rather than sent.")

Scoring rules are written in plain language, so a support complaint can outrank a purchase decision
if that is what matters to you.

![Redwatcher's setup asking how picky the scoring should be, with rules written in plain language and two suggestions to add](img/product-scoring-setup.png "**The bar, in your own words.** Rules are written as sentences — *ignore threads that are just job ads* — and it proposes ones drawn from your site. They are what the score is judged against.")

## What to do with a thread that goes against you

Decide how you will handle this before it happens. Whatever you write is public and stays up.

**Answer it, and answer it as yourself.** A complaint nobody answers reads as one everybody agreed
with. You do not have to win the argument. You have to show that a person from the company read
it.

**Fix the fact, not the opinion.** If the thread contains something factually wrong about your
product, correct that one thing and leave the rest. Arguing with a judgement in public rarely
changes it and is usually screenshotted.

**Say what changed, later.** A thread from three months ago still ranks. A short follow-up saying
that the thing they complained about now works is read by everyone who arrives afterwards, and there
will be more of them than there were at the time.

**Do not delete anything.** You cannot remove someone else's post, and attempting to have one
removed is itself a story on Reddit.

## Which mentions are worth answering

| The thread is… | Worth a reply |
| --- | --- |
| Asking which product to use | Yes, and it is the highest-value case |
| Complaining about something your product fixes | Yes, if you answer the problem rather than pitch |
| Naming your brand in a comparison | Yes |
| Reporting a fault with your product | Yes, and quickly |
| A resale listing or a job post | No |
| Mentioning your brand in passing | Rarely |

## Step 5 — Know the rules before you reply

Reddit's communities set their own rules, most of them restrict self-promotion, and moderation is
done by people. A brand account that only ever appears when its own name comes up will be treated as
marketing, and that reaction attaches to the brand.

Answer the question, say who you are, and be useful in the threads where your product is not the
answer. Redwatcher does not draft replies and does not post them. It finds the mention, scores it,
explains the score and links you to the thread, and you write the reply.

## Knowing whether it is working

Three numbers tell you, and all three are on the Stats screen.

**Coverage**, meaning how much of each subreddit was actually read. When a community you named is
not being read in full, that is a hole in the monitoring, and it will look exactly like a quiet
week.

**How many mentions cleared your bar**, against how many were found. If almost everything clears it,
the bar is doing no work. If nothing does, it is too high or the terms are too broad.

**How many you answered.** The tool cannot count this one, and it is the number that decides whether
any of it was worth doing. If nobody ever replies to the alerts, you have bought yourself a report
and not a way of reaching customers.

## Monitoring Reddit for brand mentions: questions people ask

### How do you monitor Reddit for brand mentions?
Name the subreddits where your customers talk and the terms to watch: your brand, its spellings and
your competitors. A monitoring tool then reads posts and comments in those communities and scores
each mention before alerting you.

### What is brand monitoring and why is it important?
Brand monitoring is watching for public mentions of your brand so you can answer the ones that
matter. On Reddit it matters more than on most platforms, because the threads are read by people
making the same decision months later and they rank in search.

### What does Reddit brand monitoring cost?
$29 a month per brand for 25 keywords and 25 subreddits, $49 for 50 and 50, $89 for 100 and 100,
with scoring, every alert channel and unlimited team members on all three. Seven-day trial, no card.

### How often should I check for brand mentions?
You do not check. Monitoring tells you. Redwatcher reads every tracked subreddit around the clock,
multiple times every hour, on every plan.

### Should I reply to every mention?
No. Reply where there is a question you can answer. A resale listing or a passing reference needs
nothing from you, and the score tells the two apart before either reaches you.
