# How to reply to Reddit mentions as a brand without getting banned

Canonical: https://redwatcher.com/how-to-reply-to-reddit-mentions-without-getting-banned

**In short**

**To reply to a Reddit mention of your brand without getting banned, read the subreddit's rules first, say you work for the brand, answer the thread's question, and post one reply from your own account.** Reddit's rules ask everyone to follow each community's rules, to participate authentically and not to mislead anyone.

Redwatcher is a Reddit monitoring tool. Tracks keywords, brand mentions and competitors across the
subreddits you choose, scores every match for relevance, and alerts by email, Slack, Telegram or
webhook around the clock. From $29/month per project. A project is one brand or one client, with
its own keywords, subreddits, score and alerts. A subreddit is one of Reddit's communities, such as
r/smallbusiness. Each one has its own rules and its own moderators, the members who help run it and
enforce those rules. A keyword is a word or phrase you tell Redwatcher to look for, such as your
brand name, and a match is a new post or comment in one of your subreddits that contains one. A
webhook sends each alert to a web address you give it. The score is a number from 0 to 100 for how
closely a thread fits what you want to hear about, and threads below the score you set are not sent.
A thread is a Reddit post together with the
comments under it. Redwatcher finds the threads that mention you and scores them,
and you write the reply yourself, from your own Reddit account.

## What gets a brand's account suspended on Reddit, according to its rules?

Reddit's rules ask you to follow the rules of each community you take part in, to participate
authentically, and not to mislead anyone about who you are. Two of the eight rules that apply on
every community cover a brand's reply directly:

- Rule 2: *"Abide by community rules. Participate authentically in communities where you have a
personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content
manipulation) that interfere with Reddit communities."*
- Rule 5: *"Be authentic. You don't have to use your real name, but do not intentionally mislead
others or impersonate an individual or entity in a deceptive manner."*

The same page says that each community's culture is shaped *"by the community rules enforced by
moderators"*. Under
Enforcement it lists, among other measures, *"Removal of content"* and *"Temporary or permanent
suspension of accounts"*. All of these were read from
[redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules](https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) on 3 October 2026.

| What Reddit's rules ask | What it means for your reply |
| --- | --- |
| Abide by community rules (Rule 2) | Read the subreddit's rules before you write anything |
| Participate authentically (Rule 2) | Answer as the person you are, in your own words |
| Do not spam (Rule 2) | Post one reply to one thread, and do not paste the same reply into other threads |
| Do not intentionally mislead others (Rule 5) | Say that you work for the brand |

## Step 1: Read the subreddit's rules on links and self-promotion before you write

Open the subreddit and read its rules and its sidebar, the panel that describes the community. A
subreddit's rules can limit links, self-promotion or posts from company accounts, and a reply that
breaks one of them can be removed even when it is polite and useful.

Look for three things: whether links to your own site are allowed, whether anything is said about
companies or vendors answering, and whether the community has a weekly thread for
promotion, or a flair (a label added to a post) that marks a post as promotional. If the rules forbid what you were going to write, change the reply or leave the thread
alone. If they are unclear, send the moderators a short message asking whether a reply from someone
at the company is welcome.

## Step 2: Decide whether the mention is worth answering

Answer the threads where you can help, and leave the rest. A brand mention is any post or comment
that names your brand, and they differ a great deal. Reply when someone asks which product to use,
as long as you say who you are, and when someone reports a fault with your product, and do it soon.
Reply when a thread says something factually wrong, correcting only that fact, and when your brand
is named in a comparison, if you can add something the thread lacks. Skip resale listings and job
posts, and rarely reply to a passing mention.

| The thread is… | Worth a reply |
| --- | --- |
| Asking which product to use | Yes, if you say who you are |
| Reporting a fault with your product | Yes, and soon |
| Saying something factually wrong about your product | Yes, correct the one fact |
| Naming your brand in a comparison | Yes, if you can add something the thread lacks |
| A resale listing or a job post | No |
| Mentioning your brand in passing | Rarely |

## How does Redwatcher decide which Reddit mentions are sent to you?

Redwatcher scores each thread before it is sent to you, and threads below the score you set are not
sent. Every match gets a score from 0 to 100 for how closely the thread fits what you want to hear
about, with the reasons written underneath. The inbox is the screen in the app that lists every match with its score, including the
ones below the score you set.

The alerts come from checks. In each check Redwatcher reads the subreddits you choose for new posts
and comments, and it checks around the clock, multiple times every hour. Median freshness is about 15
minutes. When a thread scores high and should not have, you say what was wrong and it becomes a rule,
and later threads like it are scored against that rule. [How to get Reddit notifications for
keywords](/how-to-get-reddit-notifications-for-keywords) covers choosing the keywords, the subreddits
and the score.

![The Redwatcher inbox for a Klaviyo project: a thread scored 94, a competitor comparison scored 88, and a job post scored 24 and skipped, each with the reasons underneath](img/product-inbox.webp "**Redwatcher scores every match, and only the threads that reach the score you set are sent.** Captured 31 August 2026. A buying question scored 94, a job post scored 24 and was not sent, and each one shows its reasons.")

## Step 3: Say that you work for the brand

Put who you are in the first line of the reply. Rule 5 asks you not to mislead others, and a reply
praising a product from someone who works there, with no mention of it, does exactly that.

A plain opening works: *"I work at Acme, so I'm biased, but here is how the export works."* If you
founded the company, say so. If the account you reply from is a company account, its name already
says it, and the first line can go straight to the answer.

Reply from an account that is clearly yours. Writing from a second account, or asking a friend to
post the praise for you, misleads people in the way Rule 5 forbids, whatever the reply says.

## Step 4: Answer the question that was asked

Write the answer to the thread's question before anything about your product. If someone asks how to
export their data, explain how to export it. If they compare two tools, say what yours does on the
point they raised, and say plainly where it does not do what they need.

Add a link only when it answers the question, such as a help article for the exact step, and only
when the subreddit's rules allow links.

When the thread says something wrong about your product, correct that one fact and leave the
opinions alone. A complaint is answered best by showing that a person at the company read it and
by saying what you will do.

## Step 5: Post one reply and stay in the thread

Post one reply. If people answer you, answer them in the same thread. A second top-level reply
(a reply to the post itself rather than to a comment) from the same account, or the same reply posted across several threads, is what Rule 2's *"do not
spam"* is about.

Leave the votes to the community. Rule 2 asks people not to engage in content manipulation, so do
not ask colleagues to upvote your reply or to post in support of it.

Redwatcher has no part in this step. It never posts, does not draft replies, does not send
direct messages and never asks for your Reddit login. Every alert ends in a View on Reddit button, and you
open the thread and reply from your own account like any other member of that community.

![A Redwatcher alert for a thread scored 94, as a Slack message and in an email carrying the threads from that check, each with the reasons and a View on Reddit button](img/product-alerts.webp "**Every alert ends in a View on Reddit button.** Captured 30 August 2026.")

## What a good first week of replying looks like

In the first week, write fewer replies than you expected to, and keep a note of which communities
allow links and which do not.

Reply where you can answer a question, and read how the thread answers you. When people thank you
for the detail, write the next reply the same way.

## What to do when your Reddit reply is removed, called advertising or argued with

When a reply goes wrong, find which of four cases you are in: it was removed, people say you are
advertising, the thread turns against you, or the subreddit does not want company replies at all.

**Your reply was removed.** Read the subreddit's rules again and find the one it broke. If none
seems to fit, send the moderators a short, polite message asking what to change. Do not post the
same reply again.

**People say you are advertising.** Check the first line. If it does not say who you are, edit the
reply to add it. If it does, check whether the reply answered the question before it mentioned the
product.

**The thread turns against you.** Reply once, as yourself, and stick to the facts. Do not reply
again to keep the argument going. Other people can read and quote whatever you write.

**A subreddit does not want company replies at all.** Respect it, and keep reading. The threads
still tell you what people want from products like yours. [How to monitor Reddit for brand
mentions](/how-to-monitor-reddit-for-brand-mentions) covers what to do with a thread you cannot
answer.

## How much does it cost to monitor Reddit mentions, and is there a free way?

Replying on Reddit costs nothing, and finding the threads yourself is free if you read every
subreddit by hand. Redwatcher costs $29 a month per project for 25 keywords and 25 subreddits, $49
for 50 of each, and $89 for 100 of each. A project is one brand or one client, with its own
keywords, subreddits, score and alerts. Every project starts with a seven-day trial that takes no
card, and Redwatcher has no free plan. Every plan includes every feature, every competitor you track
counts as one keyword, and adding team members costs nothing. Prices from
[redwatcher.com/pricing](/pricing), read on 3 October 2026.

## How this guide was checked

Redwatcher wrote this guide, and Redwatcher sells a Reddit monitoring tool. On 3 October 2026 we read
Reddit's rules at redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules and the prices at redwatcher.com/pricing. Every
quotation from Reddit on this page comes from that one page. We could not load Reddit Help's
articles that day, so nothing here is taken from them. We did not read the rules of any particular
subreddit, and each community's rules differ, so Step 1 lists what to look for in them. We publish no figures on how often replies are removed or accounts suspended, because we
have none.

## Replying to Reddit mentions: questions people ask

### Can a company reply to Reddit posts about its brand?
A company can reply on Reddit as long as the reply follows Reddit's rules and the subreddit's own
rules. Reddit's Rule 2 asks people to participate authentically and not to spam, and Rule 5 asks
them not to intentionally mislead others. A reply that says who wrote it, answers the question and
is posted once fits both. Read from redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules on 3 October 2026.

### Do I have to say I work for the brand when I reply on Reddit?
Saying so is the plain way to follow Rule 5, which asks people not to intentionally mislead others or
impersonate an individual or entity in a deceptive manner. Praise for a product from someone who
works there, with no mention of it, misleads the reader. Put it in the first line, such as
"I work at Acme, so I'm biased". Read from redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules on 3 October 2026.

### Where do I find a subreddit's rules?
A subreddit's rules sit beside its description, in the sidebar of the subreddit's page. Reddit's
rules say each community is shaped by its own rules, enforced by its moderators, so read them before
replying. Look for limits on links, self-promotion and company accounts. When the rules are unclear,
send the moderators a short message and ask.

### Can I post a link to my product in a Reddit reply?
A link is fine when the subreddit's rules allow it and the link answers the question, such as a help
article for the exact step someone asked about. A subreddit can set its own limits on links and
self-promotion, so check its rules first. When in doubt, answer in the reply itself and leave the link
out.

### Does Redwatcher post replies on Reddit for me?
Redwatcher never posts. It has no posting feature, does not draft replies, does not send direct
messages and never asks for your Reddit login. Redwatcher finds the threads in the subreddits you choose,
scores every match from 0 to 100 with the reasons, and sends the threads that reach the score you
set, each with a View on Reddit button. Every reply is written and posted by you.

### What should I do if my Reddit reply gets removed?
Start by reading the subreddit's rules again to find the rule the reply broke. If none fits, send the
moderators a short, polite message asking what to change, and do not post the same reply again.
Reddit's rules list removal of content and suspension of accounts among the ways they are enforced.
