## How does a scraper differ from a monitor on Reddit?

The difference between a Reddit scraper and Reddit monitoring is that a scraper is a program you run that copies posts, comments or profiles out of Reddit into files or a database you keep, and monitoring is a service that reads the subreddits you name around the clock and tells you when a post or comment matches your keywords. So the two differ in what you get and who does the work: with a scraper you write it, run it, store what it collects and read the results yourself, and with monitoring the output is an alert and an inbox, not a dataset. A scraper can cover any period you point it at. A monitor starts from the moment you set it up.

## Which do you need for Reddit, a scraper or a monitor?

## What does a monitor give you that a scraper does not?

## What does a scraper give you that a monitor does not?

A scraper gives you the records themselves, in the shape you choose: a CSV, a database table or a JSON dump with the author, the timestamp, Reddit's vote count and the full comment tree under each post, ready for a spreadsheet or a model.
