How to track share of voice on Reddit

Updated 3 October 2026

In short

Share of voice on Reddit is your brand's mentions divided by the mentions of your brand and every competitor you track added together, times 100, over the same period and subreddits. Track all of the names in one Redwatcher project, then count each name's matches in the inbox filter or in a sheet fed by the webhook.

Redwatcher is a Reddit monitoring tool. Tracks keywords, brand mentions and competitors across the subreddits you choose, scores every match for relevance, and alerts by email, Slack, Telegram or webhook around the clock. From $29/month per project. Redwatcher has no share-of-voice chart or report. It gives you the counts, and the division is a calculation you do yourself, in your head for a quick look or in a spreadsheet for a monthly record.

What is share of voice on Reddit, and how is it calculated?

Share of voice is your brand's mentions as a percentage of all the mentions in your category, where the category is your brand plus the competitors you choose to count. The formula is your mentions divided by the total, times 100. With made-up numbers: if your brand is mentioned in 12 threads in a month, one competitor in 18 and another in 10, the total is 40, and your share of voice is 12 ÷ 40 × 100 = 30%. The two competitors have 45% and 25%, and the three shares add up to 100%.

Four choices decide whether the figure means anything, and they have to stay the same from one month to the next.

A match is a new post or comment in one of your subreddits that contains one of your names. Redwatcher scores each one from 0 to 100, and only the threads that reach the score you set are sent to you. A thread is one Reddit post together with all the comments under it.

Step 1: Put your brand and every competitor in one project

Put your brand and all the competitors in the same Redwatcher project, so every name is counted across the same subreddits in the same checks. A project is one set of keywords, subreddits, score and alert channels, and Redwatcher charges for each project separately. A keyword is a name or phrase Redwatcher looks for. Each competitor counts as one keyword against the project's allowance of 25, 50 or 100, its spellings sit under it and do not use up keywords, and your brand's own name does not use up a keyword. The inbox, the screen in the app that lists your matches, and the webhook, a URL you give Redwatcher so it can send each alert there as data, call each of these a term. A check is one pass over your subreddits, and Redwatcher runs them around the clock, multiple times every hour.

Add each competitor on the Competitors step of setup, with the spellings people use for it: lower case, without a space, or under an older name. More about choosing them is in how to track competitor mentions on Reddit.

Every competitor in the same project as your brand. Each name carries its own spellings, so a mention written another way still counts for that company.

Step 2: Choose the subreddits once

Keep the subreddits where your category is discussed and leave them alone for the period you measure. Each name is matched in the new posts and new comments of every subreddit on the list, so the list is the market your share is measured in. A share of voice taken across r/cooking says something different from one taken across a single brand's own subreddit, and both are fine as long as you report which one it is.

Step 3: Decide what counts as a mention

Decide whether every match counts, or only the threads that reach the score you set, and keep that choice for the whole period. That gives you two ways to count.

All matches, whatever their score. Each time a name is written, it counts. This is the raw volume, and it includes resale listings, job posts and passing mentions.

Only the threads that reach the score you set. Only the conversations about your category that you would want to read count. This figure moves when you change the scoring rules, so note the score and keep it fixed for the period.

Pick one and write it next to the figure. Use all matches if you want to compare with a count you made by hand. Use only the threads that reach the score you set if you will build the sheet in Step 5, because the webhook sends only those.

Step 4: Count each name in the inbox

Count each name with the inbox filter: set Read state to All, narrow to one term at a time, and write down each count. The inbox lists your matches as cards, with tabs reading Relevant, Skipped and All, each with its count. Relevant holds the matches at or above the score you set, Skipped holds the ones under it, and All holds both.

  1. Open Filter. Under When, pick 7 days, 30 days or All time.
  2. Under Read state, pick All. The inbox starts on Only new, and the counts drop as you mark threads read, which has nothing to do with Reddit.
  3. Under Narrow to one term, pick your brand. Write down the count on All for all matches, or on Relevant for the matches that reach the score you set.
  4. Pick the next competitor and write down its count, then the next, until every name has one.
  5. Add the counts up and divide your brand's count by the total.

Tick Show only unique threads in the same filter to count threads instead of comments. A busy thread can carry a dozen matching comments, and the tick keeps one row per thread, the highest-scoring one.

One thread, two names. The comparison thread carries a chip for each brand that matched, which matters when you count the same thread for both.

The filter files each match under the first term that matched it. A thread like the one above, naming your brand and a competitor, is counted under one of the two in the filter, while a fair share of voice counts it for both. The inbox keeps only a project's most recent matches, so on a busy project All time may not reach back to the day you started. For a monthly record, log every alert to a sheet through the webhook.

Step 5: Log every alert to a spreadsheet through the webhook

Send every alert to a sheet through the webhook, where each row lists every name that matched, so a thread naming two companies counts for both. Each alert carries a field called matched that lists every term from your project that matched. The sheet counts the second kind of mention from Step 3: one row per thread with One alert per thread, one row per post or comment with Every match.

  1. Connect the webhook to a sheet. Reddit alerts to Zapier and Make has the steps and the full list of fields. Zapier, a service that passes data from one app to another, lists a Catch Hook trigger on its Webhooks by Zapier page, which receives the webhook, and a Create Spreadsheet Row action on its Google Sheets page, which writes each alert as a row. Both were read on 3 October 2026.
  2. Map createdAt, subreddit, score, url and matched into columns, with matched joined by a comma into one cell.
  3. On the Setup screen, the page in the app that holds a project's settings, pick One alert per thread or Every match on the How often card. Every channel on the project follows this card, so Every match also means more messages in Slack or Telegram.
  4. At the end of each month, count the rows for each name with COUNTIF. Google's COUNTIF help page, read on 3 October 2026, gives the form COUNTIF(range, criterion), says the criterion can use * to match any run of characters, and says it is not case sensitive. So =COUNTIF(E:E,"*acme*") counts the rows whose matched cell holds AcmeFlow or Acme Flow. Pick a part of the name that every spelling of it contains, and put * on each side of it. When the spellings share nothing, add one COUNTIF per spelling and check the rows that hold two of them.

The sheet starts on the day you connect the webhook. Redwatcher does not resend older threads to it, so connect it on the first day of the month you want to measure.

How long before a share-of-voice figure means something?

About a month. A week holds far fewer threads than a month, so one thread more or fewer can move every name's share by several points. Day one is often quiet, because Redwatcher reads new threads from the moment setup finishes.

Read the threads behind a change before you report it. A competitor whose share jumps may have had a price rise, an outage or a launch, and one thread that a lot of people reply to can change a whole month's figure on its own. When a score is wrong along the way, you say what was wrong and it becomes a rule. A new rule changes which threads reach the score you set, so write its date next to the figures, the same as any other change to the setup.

Why does a share-of-voice figure on Reddit look wrong?

Four things cause it: a name that is a common word, a missing spelling, a total too small to compare, or a setup that changed between months.

One name has far more mentions than seems possible. The name is a common word. Open its matches in the inbox and look at what they are about. If the Skipped tab is full of threads that use the word in its everyday sense, that is the problem, and counting only the threads that reach the score you set keeps those out.

A name has none. The spelling people use is not on the list, or the subreddits do not discuss it. Add the spelling, and check the Stats screen, the page in the app that shows how much of each subreddit was read.

The total is too small to compare. Measure over a quarter, or add the subreddits where the category is discussed and start the count again from that day.

Two months disagree for no reason. Something in the setup changed: a competitor added, a subreddit removed, the score moved, the How often card switched. Write those changes down with the date, next to the figures.

The Stats screen. The total matched across all your terms for a period, and whether every subreddit was checked. The total is for every name together, so the split by name comes from the inbox or the sheet.

What does it cost to track share of voice on Reddit, and is there a free way?

Redwatcher costs $29 a month per project for 25 keywords and 25 subreddits, $49 for 50 of each, and $89 for 100 of each, with a seven-day trial that takes no card, and the free way is to read the subreddits yourself and keep the tally by hand. Your brand and every competitor sit in one project, and each competitor counts as one keyword. Redwatcher has no free plan. Every plan includes every feature, the webhook among them, with no limit on how many team members you add. Prices from redwatcher.com/pricing, read on 3 October 2026.

Counting by hand goes name by name, and it works for a few small communities and a short period. Redwatcher reads the subreddits around the clock, multiple times every hour, and sends each alert to the webhook, so a sheet keeps every alert from the day you connect it. You count the rows for each name and divide your brand's count by the total.

How this guide was checked

Redwatcher wrote this guide about its own product. On 3 October 2026 we read the prices on redwatcher.com/pricing, Google's COUNTIF help page, and Zapier's pages for Webhooks by Zapier and Google Sheets. The filter names, the Setup card and the webhook fields were checked against Redwatcher's own app on 3 October 2026. We did not build a Zapier workflow or a sheet for this guide. The screenshots are Redwatcher's own screens with example data, and the share-of-voice figures above are made up to show the arithmetic. None of them is a measurement.

Reddit share of voice: questions people ask

Does Redwatcher have a share-of-voice report?

Redwatcher has no share-of-voice chart or report. The inbox filter counts each name's matches over 7 days, 30 days or all time, and the webhook sends every alert with the terms that matched, so a spreadsheet can count them. Share of voice is then your brand's count divided by the total for your brand and the competitors you track, times 100, a calculation you do in a sheet or by hand.

How do I measure brand mentions against competitors on Reddit?

Put your brand and each competitor in one Redwatcher project, so all of them are matched in the same subreddits. Then count each name for the same period, either in the inbox filter under Narrow to one term, with Read state set to All, or in a sheet fed by the webhook. Divide your brand's count by the total of all the names to get your share.

Should I count every mention or only relevant ones?

All matches, whatever their score, give raw volume, including resale listings and passing mentions. Counting only the threads that reach the score you set keeps the conversations worth reading and leaves the noise out. Either works if it stays the same from month to month. The webhook sends only the threads that reach the score you set, so a sheet built from it gives the second kind.

How many competitors should I include?

Share of voice needs the companies a buyer would consider alongside yours, and a figure changes whenever the set changes, so pick them once for the period. Each competitor counts as one keyword against the project's allowance of 25, 50 or 100, and its spellings sit under its name. A competitor added halfway through a month lowers everyone else's share.

Can I track share of voice in one subreddit?

Yes. Add only that subreddit to the project, and every name is counted only there. The figure then describes that community and nothing wider, which suits a niche where most of the discussion about your category happens in one subreddit. Small communities give small totals, so a single thread can move the share by several points, and a quarter is a better period than a week.

Can Redwatcher count mentions from before I started?

Redwatcher reads new posts and comments from the moment monitoring starts, so the count begins then. A share of voice for last year cannot be built from it. The webhook sheet begins on the day you connect it, and Redwatcher does not resend older threads to it, so start both at the beginning of the period you want to measure.
